The manufacturer or importer of a hazardous substance or mixture is required to prepare and provide a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for each quantity of the substance or mixture if at least one of the following conditions is met:
- the substance or mixture is classified as hazardous,
- the substance is persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic,
- the substance may pose a risk to human health or the environment,
- the substance or mixture has MAC (nid.Maximaal Aanvaarde Concentratie) indicators,
- the information on the packaging is incomplete.
The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) must be prepared in the official language of the country in which the substance or mixture is placed on the market. It can be provided in both paper and electronic form.
The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) must contain information enabling safe use of the substance or mixture, including:
- Identification of the substance or mixture and identification data of the supplier,
- Hazard identification,
- Composition/information on ingredients,
- First aid measures,
- Firefighting procedures,
- Procedures in case of accidental release into the environment,
- Handling and safe storage of the substance,
- Exposure control and personal protective equipment,
- Physicochemical properties,
- MAC, MAC-C, MAC-TGG/TGW/STEL indicators
- Stability and reactivity,
- Toxicological information,
- Ecological information,
- Waste management,
- Information on transport and storage.
In a word – the card must contain all relevant information on the properties and hazards associated with a given substance or mixture, known to the manufacturer.
This is a basic document when working with chemicals – both at the stage of production, transport, storage or use.
