In our professional work, we may not only have to deal with mechanical or chemical hazards. Biological hazards caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites are equally serious.
An example? Legionella. This is a dangerous bacterium that breeds in standing water, especially in hot water installations, tanks, boilers and even on the shower head. It spreads through droplets – you can get infected by inhaling water vapour. It can lead to acute pneumonia.
💡Fun fact
Legionella bacteria are named after the American Legion. In 1976, during their convention in Philadelphia, a mysterious outbreak of lung disease occurred, killing 29 people. The newly discovered bacteria was named “Legionella pneumophila”.
Other microorganisms can cause severe food poisoning – diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain.
Never drink raw water from canals, rivers, ponds or other sources that are not marked as safe for consumption. Clear water does not mean clean water!
Simple protection? Oily cream.
Some bacteria can penetrate through micro-injuries in the skin. A layer of oily cream on your hands and face acts as a protective barrier. Use it whenever there is a suspicion of contact with microorganisms (e.g. in a moist environment, when in contact with soil or water).
Don’t forget about viruses.
The SARS-CoV-2 virus, which caused a global pandemic, is still circulating around us – just like flu viruses. If someone nearby is coughing or has cold symptoms:
According to ARBOWET (Dutch labor code), employers are required to assess the risk of biological threats and protect employees accordingly – through personal protective equipment, training and hygiene procedures.
